Elon Musk, co-founder and chief executive of the world’s biggest electric vehicle maker Tesla , has said he intends to have self-driving cars ready by the end of the year, it was reported on Monday. The world’s richest person, who was speaking at an energy conference in Norway on Monday, said he expected a wider introduction of self-driving vehicles to the roads of the US and possibly Europe, depending on the regulatory approvals, Reuters reported. Mr Musk said he was also focusing on his SpaceX Starship spacecraft. “The two technologies I am focused on, trying to ideally get done before the end of the year, are getting our Starship into orbit … and then having Tesla cars to be able to do self-driving." How cloning woolly mammoths could save the world

Image
Before the end of the decade, ponderous woolly mammoths could be traipsing across the tundra once again. Driven to extinction about 10,000 years ago, the 15-tonne animals could soon be kicking up the permafrost — if a company called Colossal has its way. Under the aegis of George Church, considered by many to be the godfather of genetic engineering, Colossal is using state-of-the-art genomic sequencing and Crispr gene-editing technologies to splice together recovered genetic material from the long-lost mammoths and DNA from Asian elephants. It is a process known as “de-extinction”, and researchers have been working on it for several years. Athlete, 22, will swim the Bosphorus Strait in memory of his grandfather

Image
A young British man will attempt to swim the Bosphorus to raise funds in memory of his late grandfather who died with dementia. Louis Alexander, 22, from London, has dedicated his life to raising money for brain disorders. Now, the multi-sport athlete will take on what is said to be the oldest swimming challenge in the world, crossing the Hellespont, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Romantic poet Lord Byron famously swam the strait between the continents in north-west Turkey in 1810 in homage to the Greek classical myth of Hero and Leander. “It’s considered by many to be the epitome of ocean swimming because it’s the oldest swim in history", Mr Alexander said. “What’s even more special is that Lord Byron was 22 years old when he did the swim, which is the same age I will be during the swim.” Mr Alexander decided last year to dedicate his life to raising money for charity via such challenges, turning him into a full-time adventurer. High oil prices drive record $77.3bn quarterly profit for GCC-listed firms

Image
RIYADH: The Gulf Cooperation Council’s listed companies hit a record aggregate profit of $77.3 billion in the second quarter of 2022, as the oil-rich region benefited from elevated oil prices that traded at around $100 a barrel. This is up from $65.4 billion on a sequential basis, while year-on-year growth was even stronger at 63 percent from $47.6 billion in the same period of 2021, a Kamco Invest report shows. In Saudi Arabia, the profits of listed firms rose 70.4 percent on the year to $59.5 billion in the second quarter, once again accounting for the largest share of GCC-wide profits. The report explained that the earnings boom was backed by a growth in profit across most sectors, led by energy, banks, and materials which compensated for the adverse performance of diversified financial firms. Iraq’s Moqtada Sadr gives followers one hour to end protests

Image
BAGHDAD: Powerful Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called on his loyalists in the government zone to withdraw after nearly 24 hours of fierce clashes with security forces and paramilitary groups. In a televised speech Tuesday, al-Sadr gave his supporters, hundreds of whom stormed the government palace and have been holding an ongoing sit-in outside the parliament building, an hour to leave. Those backing influential cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr fired into the Green Zone, where it appeared Iraqi security forces were firing back at them. Live television footage showed the chaos, with at least one wounded man being taken away in a three-wheel rickshaw, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry visible behind them. The death toll continued to rise on Tuesday after the unrest erupted the previous day, according to two medical officials. Neighboring Iran closed its land borders to the country. Iraq’s military said four rockets were launched into the heavily fortified Green Zone. Outside of sporadic unrest in southe

North Korea: ‘All recovered’ after COVID-19 outbreak

Image
North Korea reported zero fever cases Friday for a seventh straight day, state media said, adding that everyone who had fallen sick since the country confirmed its first COVID-19 infections had recovered. The isolated country, which has maintained a rigid coronavirus blockade since the start of the pandemic, announced an omicron outbreak in the capital Pyongyang in May and activated a “maximum emergency epidemic prevention system.” State media have meticulously reported the official number of cases, deaths, treatments and recoveries every day since, with leader Kim Jong Un putting himself front and center of the government’s response. North Korea refers to “fever patients” rather than “COVID-19 patients” in case reports, apparently due to a lack of testing capacity. “No new fever cases were reported during the past week and all those receiving treatment have recovered across the country,” the official KCNA reported Friday. “The overall anti-epidemic situation of the DPRK has entered a

UK house prices fall for first time in a year

Image
House prices dropped by 0.1 per cent month-on-month in July, marking the first decrease in more than a year, according to mortgage lender Halifax. Across the UK, the annual rate of price growth slowed to 11.8 per cent, down from 12.5 per cent in June. House prices slipped back for the first time since June 2021 in monthly terms and the market is likely to weaken further as interest rates go up and the cost-of-living squeeze tightens, Halifax said. They had risen by 1.4 per cent this June. The weakening of the house market comes after a boom triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic and the switch to working from home which pumped up demand for bigger homes, and by rock-bottom borrowing costs which are now rising again. Russell Galley, Halifax managing director, said: “While we shouldn't read too much into any single month, especially as the fall is only fractional, a slowdown in annual house price growth has been expected for some time. US to issue ID to migrants awaiting deportation proceedings

Image
US immigration authorities are planning to issue photo ID cards to immigrants in deportation proceedings in a bid to slash paper use and help people stay up-to-date on required meetings and court hearings, officials said. The proposal from Immigration and Customs Enforcement is still being developed as a pilot program, and it was not immediately clear how many the agency would issue. The cards would not be an official form of federal identification, and would state they are to be used by the Department of Homeland Security. The idea is for immigrants to be able to access information about their cases online by using a card rather than paper documents that are cumbersome and can fade over time, officials said. They said ICE officers could also run checks on the cards in the field.“Moving to a secure card will save the agency millions, free up resources, and ensure information is quickly accessible to DHS officials while reducing the agency’s FOIA backlog,” an ICE spokesperson said in a s

Twitter says Elon Musk making up excuses to breach deal

Image
Twitter on Thursday said the notion Elon Musk was “hoodwinked” into inking a $44 billion buyout deal defies reason and the facts. In a filing, Twitter rejected counter claims made by Musk as he fights to walk away from the deal he inked in April to buy the San Francisco-based company. “According to Musk, he — the billionaire founder of multiple companies, advised by Wall Street bankers and lawyers — was hoodwinked by Twitter into signing a $44 billion merger agreement,” Twitter said. “That story is as implausible and contrary to fact as it sounds.”Musk last week filed a countersuit along with a legal defense against Twitter’s claim that the billionaire is contractually bound to complete the takeover deal.
