Qatar plans to produce 500k bpd oil outside its borders by 2023: MEED

Image
Qatar is planning to produce 500,000 barrels of oil outside its borders by 2030, MEED reported citing QatarEnergy’s CEO. Moreover, the country is committed to maintaining its oil production at 650,000 barrels per day, the longest possible, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said. Qatar, which joined the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries nearly 60 years ago, ended its membership in a surprise announcement in December 2018. Al-Kaabi indicated that he did not regret Qatar's decision to leave OPEC. Qatar has no voice in the group of oil-producing countries due to its relative size, he explained.

Mena economies set for fastest expansion since 2016 but growth is uneven, World Bank says

Image
Middle East and North Africa economies are set to expand at their fastest pace since 2016, but growth will be uneven as oil-importing countries continue to overcome the impact of the pandemic and the shock of soaring energy and food prices exacerbated by the outbreak of the Ukraine war, coupled with rising interest rates, according to the World Bank. Mena economies are projected to grow 5.5 per cent this year and a slower rate of 3.5 per cent in 2023, the Washington-based lender said in its latest economic update. Oil-exporting countries of the region are benefiting from high hydrocarbon prices, but oil-importing nations are vulnerable to shifting market dynamics, the bank said. GCC economies are projected to grow 6.9 per cent in 2022, driven by high oil prices, as well as higher growth rates in non-oil sectors. Developing oil exporters are forecast to grow at lower levels expanding at 4.1 per cent this year and slow to 2.7 per cent in 2023. While oil prices have come down from nearly

Iran airs video with 2 French citizens arrested for spying

Image
Iran on Thursday published video showing two French citizens arrested for spying amid ongoing protests roiling the country that Tehran has sought to describe as a foreign plot instead of local anger over the death of a 22-year-old detained by the country’s morality police. The video released by the state-run IRNA news agency showed two French citizens, Cecile Kohler and Chuck Paris, who are unionists associated with France’s National Federation of Education, Culture and Vocational Training. The clips resembled other videos of Tehran has forced prisoners to make. In 2020, one report suggested authorities over the last decade had aired at least 355 coerced confessions. In the clips, Kohler wears a headscarf and purportedly describes herself as an “intelligence and operation agent of French foreign security service.” Paris purportedly says: “Our goals in French foreign security service is put pressure on Iran’s government.” Read More : https://www.arabnews.com/node/2176271/middle-east

Judge fines Lebanese bank heist figure, issues travel ban

Image
A Lebanese judge on Thursday fined and issued a six-month travel ban to a woman who stormed her bank with a fake pistol and took her trapped savings to cover her sister’s cancer treatment. Lebanon’s cash-strapped banks have imposed strict limits on withdrawals of foreign currency since 2019, tying up the savings of millions of people. About three-quarters of the population has slipped into poverty as the tiny Mediterranean country’s economy continues to spiral. The Lebanese pound has lost 90 percent of its value against the dollar. Sali Hafiz last month broke into a BLOM Bank branch in Beirut with activists from the Depositors’ Outcry protest group, and stormed into the manager’s office. They forced bank employees to hand over $12,000 and the equivalent of about $1,000 in Lebanese pounds. Read More : https://www.arabnews.com/node/2176281/middle-east

OPEC+ agrees output cut of 2 million barrels per day despite US concerns

Image
Oil prices edged up after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, including Russia, agreed an output reduction of 2 million barrels per day from November — its deepest cuts since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was made during OPEC+'s Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee in-person meeting in Vienna, and could prompt a recovery in oil prices that have dropped to about $90 from $120 three months ago on fears of a global economic recession, rising US interest rates and a stronger dollar. Sources told Reuters it was unclear if cuts could include additional voluntary reductions by members such as Saudi Arabia, or if they could include existing under-production by the group. OPEC+ fell about 3.6 million bpd short of its output target in August. After the decision was revealed, oil prices rose, with Brent crude up 0.38 percent to $92.15 a barrel at 04.30 p.m Saudi time, while US West Texas Intermediate went up 0.29 percent to $86.77 per barrel. Gunman in Thailand kills 34 people at day-care center

Image
A former policeman killed 34 people on Thursday in a mass shooting at a children’s day-care center in Thailand, with media reporting the gunman later shot and killed himself. The victims included 22 children as well as adults, police said in a statement. Police colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya from Nong Bua Lam Phu province said the gunman went home and killed his wife and child after the mass shooting. Earlier, police said a manhunt was under way for the shooter, and a government spokesman said the prime minister had alerted all agencies to apprehend the culprit. Mass shootings are rare in Thailand even though the rate of gun ownership is high compared with some other countries in the region, and illegal weapons are common. At least 31 people killed in mass shooting in Thailand – police

Image
At least 31 people were killed on Thursday in a mass shooting at a children’s day-care center in a northeastern province of Thailand, a police spokesperson said. Victims included both children and adults, police said in a statement, adding that the gunman was an ex-police officer and a manhunt was underway. The prime minister has alerted all agencies to take action and apprehend the culprit, a government spokesperson said. The rate of gun ownership in Thailand is high compared with some other countries in the region but official figures do not include huge numbers of illegal weapons, many of which have been brought in across porous borders over the years from strife-torn neighbors. Mass shootings are rare but in 2020, a soldier angry over a property deal gone sour killed at least 29 people and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations. Future cyber attacks 'could be deadlier than wars'

Image
Future cyber attacks could be deadlier than actual wars if rogue elements in the digital underworld take aim at critical infrastructure and connected devices, the chief executive of the world's biggest private cyber security company, Forcepoint, has said. Shutting down important entities such as utilities or taking over connected cars are among the possible scenarios cyber criminals can exploit, should they decide to engage in digital warfare in the future, Manny Rivelo told The National in an interview. “As the world becomes much more connected, the vulnerabilities grow. A war in the future doesn’t have to be bombs or missiles; it could be shutting down [the] electrical power grid of a country in the middle of winter or shutting down the capabilities of having clean water,” he said. “These are as severe, potentially, even more severe, you could argue, because they can completely shut down environments.” The dangers of turning technology into a weapon have been flagged in the past

Oil prices climb after Opec+ agrees on 2 million bpd output cut

Image
Oil prices climbed after the Opec+ alliance agreed to reduce output by 2 million barrels per day, its biggest production cut since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, as it vies to boost the energy market amid a global economic slowdown that is weighing on fuel demand. Brent, the benchmark for two thirds of the world’s oil, was up 0.19 per cent at $93.55 a barrel at 8.52am UAE time on Thursday. West Texas Intermediate, the gauge that tracks US crude, was trading 0.18 per cent higher at $87.92 a barrel. After registering their worst quarter in two years last month, oil prices gained more than 10 per cent over the past week in the run-up to the first in-person meeting of the 23-member supergroup of crude producers in Vienna since March 2020. The rally was largely driven by media reports that signalled a large production cut was on the table. The US Energy Information Administration weekly report, which was released on Wednesday, also fed into the rally as it showed that Americ
